When to buy

As a true beginner, please don't spend a lot of money on brand new clubs. I would always recommend buying an affordable used set of clubs or a very inexpensive new set of starter clubs. Golf equipment can be very expensive, so make sure you learn how to swing properly and gain confidence in your game before moving to make an investment into a very nice set of upgraded golf clubs. Take lessons. Learn how to play. When comfortable, go shopping.

Where to buy

I always recommending finding a golf shop that has a golf swing simulator. This allows you to try out several different golf clubs to find the ones that just feel right for you. Then, you will want to ask that shop if they "Fit" clubs. Meaning, ask if they can take your personal measurements and make the recommended adjustments for your clubs that will become perfectly tailored for your game. If they don't, I highly recommend you check out fitting options. If you are considered "Average in height" for your build/gender, you can probably get away with buying a very nice golf club set online, or off the shelf, and have some pretty good results with them. It's up to you.

Brands

Again, it's really up to you. When you go to test out a few clubs, you will make a connection with one or two of them. That's the most important thing. There are a few brands that I would recommend trying out first. For new golfers, I always recommend trying out the TaylorMade brand clubs. From the bottom to the top, TaylorMade always uses the best technology available while keeping prices at a very reasonable level. They have a wide range of clubs that should fit right into your budget too. If that doesn't work, I'd try out Callaway brand clubs. Like TaylorMade, they also have a solid reputation for making amazing golf equipment with the best technology. They don't have as many options available, but the pricing is somewhat competitive to TaylorMade. Lastly, I would recommend trying out the Ping brand. Ping is more of a luxury brand in my mind, but they've been around forever and truly know how to make a golf club that feels effortless in your hands. With the elevated price, just watch your final price. Also, make sure you factor in a new golf bag and accessories that you may want. After a couple of years, and some added experience, you can pick and choose where you want to go with your clubs. There are other brands out there for the amateur and professional level players that may fit you better as you become a better golfer.
